How to Prevent Sleep Lines on Your Face

JUVÉDERM® Before and After PhotosDid you know that your sleeping position could give you wrinkles? If you’re starting to notice wrinkles when you look in the mirror, a few small changes could help you preserve youthful skin. While all faces will eventually develop wrinkles, you can postpone signs of aging and prevent sleep wrinkles by following these tips.

Sleep on Your Back

Repeated pressure or muscle movement breaks down collagen in the skin. This is why we develop so-called “expression lines” such as frown lines, and it is also why we develop sleep lines. Sleeping on your side places pressure on your facial skin for hours at a time, and this can lead to sleep wrinkles eventually. You can avoid this by sleeping on your back, which applies no pressure to your face. If you’re a side sleeper, this may take some getting used to, but it can be well worth the results.

Get a Special Pillow or Pillowcase

Special pillows can also help reduce sleep wrinkles. Some night pillows or anti-wrinkle pillows are specially contoured to minimize facial contact with the surface of the pillow, thereby reducing sleep lines. Other pillows (such as body pillows) can help keep you on your back if you tend to roll over in your sleep. Some evidence suggests that silk or satin pillowcases also minimize traction and can minimize your likelihood of developing sleep lines.

Upgrade Your Skin Care

The right skin care treatments can make all the difference in helping you avoid premature aging. Retinols stimulate collagen to prevent fine lines from forming, and night creams help plump and firm the skin to keep it hydrated and healthy. A good skin care regimen is one of the best anti-aging tools you can have.

Get More Sleep

Getting a full night’s rest is essential for many reasons. One reason is that it affects the health and vitality of your skin. Making sure you get a full eight hours of sleep every night rejuvenates your skin and helps you feel healthy and young.

Get Treatment for Sleep Lines

If you are already developing sleep lines and you’re concerned about how they affect your appearance, non-surgical injectable treatments can minimize them. While BOTOX® Cosmetic is effective on expression lines, JUVÉDERM® is the preferred treatment for sleep lines. If your sleep lines have already begun to show, JUVÉDERM® injections can make your sleep wrinkles disappear and help you maintain youthful skin.
