How to Stay Healthy Around the Holidays

Even people who exercise regularly and carefully watch what they eat tend to put their diet on the back burner during this celebratory season.

In an effort to stay healthy and keep the size of your waistline down around the holidays, we have provided some helpful tips.

Don’t Skip Meals

Although it may be tempting to skip smaller meals throughout the day leading up to the festive dinner, starving yourself can cause you to mindlessly make up for the calories later. If you are really conscious about your calorie count, avoid the empty calorie snacks like crackers, cheese, and cookies that are served beforehand.

Go Light On Gravy and Sauces

While you may not be able to decide what types of food are being served at the holiday feast, you can control the amount of gravy and other sauces that go on top of your foods. When it comes to turkey and mashed potatoes, gravy is a must, but if you avoid covering your entire plate with it you can eliminate a lot of calories.

Limit Alcohol Consumption

For many people, it’s virtually impossible to avoid drinking alcohol around the holidays. If you are unable to completely avoid drinking, try to steer clear of sugary cocktails since they’re loaded with calories and typically worsen hangovers. To avoid losing your inhibitions and overeating, drink water between each alcoholic beverage. This will also keep you hydrated, which is beneficial for suppressing your appetite and reducing the severity of a hangover.

Exercise When You Can

Get-togethers during the holiday season usually involve a lot of sedentary moments. Want an easy way to burn a few calories? Simply go for a stroll with friends and family around the block after eating your holiday dinner.
