How to Prevent Breast Sagging as a Runner

Posted July 19, 2016 in Breast Lift, Breast Reduction, Health & Fitness

Every female runner knows to expect a little “breast bouncing” while running. Regardless of your bust size, the physical movement of running inevitably leads to some breast movement and can accelerate sagging. However, if you’d rather not give up your favorite exercise activity, you can minimize breast sagging as a runner by wearing a well-fitted sports bra or by undergoing breast surgery.

Choose a Well-Fitted Sports Bra

Finding a well-fitted sports bra can be quite difficult. You need a bra that will keep your breasts supported and mostly immobile but will not inhibit breathing or free range of motion. First, make sure you know your correct bra size by getting yourself professionally sized in person. Next, look for the styles and designs you like within your size range. A good quality sports bra will likely be expensive, but it will be made to last and is a worthwhile investment to prevent breast sagging. High-impact workouts like running should steer you toward bras with individual cups instead of shelf bras. Wide straps will support larger breasts while racerback straps can provide better support for smaller breasts. A back clasp is a must, as it will allow you to tighten your bra for your specific needs. Before making a purchase, examine your sports bra to see whether it will provide the desired support while running. The band should be snug, but not too tight, and the straps and cups should each have minimal give. The cups of the bra should fit tightly over your breasts to hold them in place without having any spillage or gaps.

Breast Surgery Can Help

For some women, breast surgery may be the best way to minimize breast sagging as a runner. Women with larger breasts may experience pain or discomfort while running, which prevents them from being able to fully enjoy the activity. If desired, breast reduction surgery can remove excess breast tissue so that your breasts are smaller and firmer and you are more comfortable while running. Since larger breasts are also likely to have premature sagging, this procedure includes a breast lift to improve the placement of the breasts. For women whose years of running have already lead to undesirable breast sagging, breast lift surgery can restore the shape and position of the breasts. Breast surgeries like these are viable options for women seeking additional help to avoid breast sagging and have a more positive experience while running.
