How Does Tummy Tuck Surgery Work?

Posted June 20, 2021 in Tummy Tuck

What exactly is tummy tuck surgery? Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen to tighten and firm up your tummy. It also reduces drooping or weakened abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck can improve your figure by helping reduce tummy bulges and restoring a flatter, smoother abdomen.

Goals of a Tummy Tuck

The tummy tuck procedure has three goals: to eliminate excess skin, tighten loose abdominal muscles, and reduce stubborn belly fat.

Eliminate Excess Skin

The first focus of a tummy tuck is the elimination of excess skin. This is accomplished by making a horizontal incision low along the waistline, between the hips where it will be hidden by clothing. The surgeon uses this incision to trim away loose skin left behind by pregnancy, aging, or weight changes. Once the other goals of the procedure have also been addressed, the surgeon pulls the skin tight and closes the incision so that it lies flat and smooth across the abdomen.

Tighten Loose Abdominal Muscles

The next focus of the tummy tuck is the tightening of loose abdominal muscles. This is accomplished through the same incision, which grants the surgeon access to the stomach muscle wall. Where the abdominal muscles have become loose or separated, the surgeon tightens them to restructure the core and restore a firmer and flatter waistline.

Reduce Stubborn Belly Fat

The third and final focus of the tummy tuck is to reduce stubborn belly fat. Abdominal fat, which can be extremely difficult to shed naturally, is best addressed using liposuction techniques. During abdominoplasty, the surgeon may use a liposuction cannula to isolate and extract pockets of localized fat cells that are contributing to a softer, rounder tummy. These fat cells are suctioned from the body, giving the stomach a flatter and firmer contour.

With these three goals accomplished, your surgeon will conclude the procedure and you will be discharged home for your recovery. Your tummy tuck results will be long-lasting as you maintain a healthy diet and avoid future weight gain or pregnancy. With tummy tuck surgery, you can achieve a smoother, flatter, and firmer waistline.
