Gynecomastia Surgery Scars: Where They Are and How They Fade

Posted March 24, 2026 in Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia), Scarring

One of the most common questions men have about gynecomastia surgery is about scarring. This is a valid concern—considering that the goal is to achieve a flatter, more masculine chest, being left with visible scars can feel like trading one concern for another. The good news is that in the majority of cases, gynecomastia surgery scars are minimal, strategically placed, and fade significantly over time.

Where Are Gynecomastia Scars Located?

In most cases, gynecomastia scars are placed very discreetly. The incision is usually located along the lower edge of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple). Scarring at this location heals particularly well because the natural color transition helps camouflage the scar.

Liposuction, which is often part of the procedure, requires a few additional minor incisions. If liposuction is used, very small incisions (typically just a few millimeters in length) are made in less noticeable areas of the chest. These typically heal as faint marks that are difficult to see once fully healed.

In more severe gynecomastia cases involving excess skin, additional surgical incisions may be necessary. During your consultation, I explain exactly where these incisions will be placed and what you can expect based on your specific anatomy.

How Do Gynecomastia Scars Heal?

All surgical scars go through a natural healing process. Initially, scars may appear slightly red or raised, but over the following months, they typically soften, flatten, and fade. Most patients find that their scars become far less noticeable by three to six months and continue to improve over the course of a year.

The final appearance of gynecomastia scars depends on a range of factors, including skin type, genetics, and how well post-operative instructions are followed. Dr. Taleisnik provides all patients with detailed post-operative instructions to support healing and optimize scar appearance.

Helping Scars Heal as Well as Possible

There are ways to support healing and minimize the appearance of gynecomastia scars. One important way is to carefully follow your post-operative instructions, which may include proper wound care, avoiding tension on the incisions, and using scar treatments specifically designed for managing surgical scars. Protecting the area from sun exposure is also important, especially in sunny environments like Orange County, as UV exposure can darken scar tissue while it heals.

Scarring After Gynecomastia Surgery

While gynecomastia surgery does leave small scars, it also significantly improves chest contour. Careful attention is given to incision placement, and in most cases, scars are subtle and fade over time.

Dr. Andres Taleisnik, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Orange County, works closely with each patient to ensure incisions are placed as discreetly as possible and that healing is closely monitored throughout recovery. If you’re considering gynecomastia surgery and have concerns about scarring, schedule a consultation with Dr. Taleisnik to discuss what you can expect based on your individual situation.
